About Us

The Men’s Shed Movement

The Poringland and District Men’s Shed is part of a movement which started in Australia, where there are now over 2,000 sheds. In the UK, there are now more than 1,000.

The men’s shed movement was initially aimed specifically at men, who often don’t have the same social networks as women. When men are made redundant, retire, or are bereaved, they may lack the close support needed to navigate those changes. This can lead to social isolation, especially in rural communities.

How We Manage The Shed

Our charity is controlled by trustees who are elected by the members, they are collectively responsible for ensuring our activities are run in accordance with the law and our constitution.

Our trustees also act as a management committee meeting every couple of months to make decisions about opening times, scheduling special events such as a Family and Friends Barbeque, our membership fees, the purchase of tools, Health and Safety etc. etc.

Occasionally we also have casual meetings during our open hours when any member can raise issues and ideas for general discussion. These are noted and then discussed at the next Trustees’ meeting.

Our Purpose

If you’re well, we aim to help keep you well. If you’re fed up, lonely, or looking for a friendly and welcoming place to go, you may have found just the place. We may be hammering, drilling, and sawing—but the loudest noise in our shed is usually laughter!

We have members with practical skills and members without—but we learn from each other and support each other equally.

Inclusion of a Women’s Section

The Poringland Men’s Shed Organisation has now expanded to include a women’s section. Women, too, can find themselves isolated or with limited social contact after bereavement, retirement, or other life events. We welcome all who benefit from connection and community.

How We Work

The Shed is a place where people can meet, socialise, and work on hands-on activities together. You don’t need to be practical—some people come to chat over a cup of tea and a biscuit. Just enjoying having a connection with others.

Sometimes we repair things for ourselves, and sometimes we take on community-based projects. It’s about having purpose, friendship, and good conversation, whether or not you pick up a tool.
